A Night at the Oscars

At Shoprider, we sell wheelchairs … you know this. But what you may not know is that we also love watching movies, eating popcorn, and slurping slush puppies – just like everyone else. The theme for our next movie night is … yes, you guessed it … movies about wheelchairs. We’ve got that Golden Globe fever! So, cuddle up with a cosy blanket, a hot water bottle, and a mug of hot chocolate (it’s winter, after all!) and prepare for a movie marathon!

These are our suggestions:

Me Before You

Everyone loves a good, weepy love story. When offbeat, eccentric Louisa (Emilia Clark) takes a job as a caregiver for Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), she’s out of her depth … and pretty soon, deep in love. But don’t let the sweet romance fool you. This film engages with the scope and complexities of suffering, the roads that love asks us to travel, and the ethical questions surrounding life, death, love, and pain. Beyond that, we’d be giving too many spoilers. So, just watch it!
Shoprider rates this: a thousand beautiful tears.

This film depicts the real-life story of Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) and his wife, Diana (Claire Foy), and how, underscored by the endurance of love, their lives merged debilitating illness with necessity and invention. After contracting Polio and being sentenced to a hospital bed for the rest of his life, Cavendish and his wife begin a journey to invent the first wheelchair with a built-in respirator. Be spellbound by the lives behind this momentous and inspiring historical narrative.

Shoprider rates this: a warming joy.

The Theory of Everything

The Theory of Everything achieves magnificent scope in unfolding the life of Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) - physicist and esteemed author of A Brief History of Time. Following his relationship with his wife (Felicity Jones), the film
spans Hawking’s rise to success, while tracking the demise of his health. It is a tale about Hawking’s enormous accomplishments that defied all expectation. With magnificent cinematographic skill, science combines with art to create a beautiful film of real-life dreams.
Shoprider rates this: an unforgettable magic

The Upside

Starring Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston, this is a film about an unlikely partnership between an elderly wealthy quadriplegic man and his new caregiver - an unemployed man in possession of a criminal record and no experience. Outrageous, humorous, touching, restorative, and redemptive, this film covers the full spectrum of emotions with humour and empathy.
Shoprider rates this: A quirky laugh!
