Joburg’s Wheelchair Friendly Destinations

With April fast approaching, T.S. Eliot’s famous words echo in our ears: “April is the cruellest month.” Well, he clearly had never visited Johannesburg! For South Africans, it’s a month that celebrates public holidays and long weekends. Plus, the City of Gold stages a breath-taking golden dance between summer and winter. What a time to be alive! Here at Shoprider, we’re taking full advantage of April and everything Johannesburg has to offer ... and we’re inviting you along! Here’s our list of things to do in Jozi that will accommodate your electric wheelchair from Shoprider.

While April may be break-your-heart beautiful, it also bids goodbye to summer. So, get outside while you can! The Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens is the ideal spot to enjoy a day out in the sunshine. Plus, it’s designed to accommodate EVERYONE, including those in an electric wheelchair. With long, winding pathways through the gardens, join your family for a walk to the waterfall, after a lazy picnic under the trees. The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia is also a great place to catch a dramatic show of Autumnal colours. Plus, your four legged best friend can join you for a fun day outdoors.

We’re about to get cultured! Most art galleries in Joburg are wheelchair-friendly, providing an inspirational and peaceful space to linger before creative excellence. The Everard Read and the Goodman Gallery are known for their notable artworks. Also, keep an eye open for Circa Gallery’s new location.

Because they’re the in thing these days, when “this little piggy went to market,” he was accompanied by a whole bunch of friends. Combining outdoor fever with retail therapy, live music, and far too much food, most markets accommodate your electric wheelchair. If you’re going green, the Bryanston Organic Market boasts everything a market could offer. Spend a day here with a few of your favourite people. The Linden Market, which takes place four times a year, is the Queen of Market-Hearts and an absolute must for every Joburger!

Many of us live our whole lives within a city, without ever exploring its history. What a shame! Liliesleaf, located in Rivonia, is a museum and heritage site that will take you on South Africa’s journey through the liberation struggle. Make April your history month and visit this landmark of the liberation movement, suitable for those in an electric wheelchair. And, of course, don’t forget the Apartheid Museum!

If you’d rather get your hands dirty, consider booking a fun course with your best friends. Become the next MasterChef at The Cookery in Craighall Park, offering excellent once-off themed cooking courses. For craft activities, paint your own bisque ware, pottery, and ceramics at Seedpod Studio or Color Café. Remember – there are no mistakes; only process!

Wherever you decide to go, Shoprider will go with you. With our wide range of mobility scooters and wheelchairs, we cater for every unique need. We care about your mobility, and ultimately, your lifestyle.
