Help me choose

If this is the first time you are looking into buying a electric mobility scooter or wheelchair the range and different choices might be daunting.  Over the years we have helped thousands of customers pick the mobility device that best suite their needs, and have come up with a key set of criteria to help determine what will work for you:

  • Electric Wheelchair vs Electric Scooter:  The biggest difference between a scooter and a wheelchair is the steering.  On the Scooter there is a tiller and you steer with both arms/hands, not unlike a bicycle.  On the Power Chairs you steer with a small joystick.  The scooter requires a certain amount of upper body strength and dexterity, while the power chair can be driven with one finger.
  • 3 Wheel vs 4 Wheel:  As a rule a 3 wheeled scooter will have a much better turning circle than a 4 wheeled scooter.  Also, because of the layout of the chassis the 3 wheeled scooter will give better legroom than an equivalently sized 4 wheeled scooter.  However, the 4 wheeled scooters are more stable.  Because the 4 wheeled scooter has a wheel at every corner, manoeuvering at speed, or in off camber situations is more stable than on a 3 wheeler.
  • Transportability:  If being able to take a scooter along when travelling by car/train/plane/bus is very important, then choose one of the models from the transportable range.  All of the these scoooters quickly and easily disassemble into smaller parts for loading and unloading.  The sealed lead acid batteries are approved to take onboard commercial planes.  When choosing a scooter that is travel friendly, the less body panels and trim there is, the easier it will load and the less it is likely to get damaged.
  • Intended use:  Where are you planning to use the scooter?  All of the scooters will work very well on smooth hard surfaces.  Keep in mind that the smaller the wheels on the scooter, the less able it will be on rough terrain.  If you intend using the scooter on the lawn or dirt tracks, pick one with large wheels.  There is even a 4x4 model available if the going gets really tough.
  • Load rating:  Every scooter/chair is rated for a specific weight.  Pick a model that will accomodate the weight of the user.  The weight of the user and the terrain are the two biggest factors that determine the range of the scooter.
  • Battery size:  As a rule of thumb, the bigger the battery the bigger the range it can travel.  Make sure to pick one that can get you to your destination and back, with spare capacity left.  Batteries will eventually wear out and need replacing from time to time.
